DON'T DRINK THE WATER...

Estimated bottle water production for 2007 was around 9 billion gallons. In English that accounts for some 10-12 billion dollars of revenue.

All that water and all that money for something that comes right out of the faucet at home. I even remember drinking that same water right out of the hose on a hot summer day as a child. I must say the best tasting water came right from the hose and even my dog would have agreed. Would I encourage you to drink out of the faucet or garden hose today? Probably not, but one can go green by simply placing a quality affordable water filter on their faucet at home. Such a small percentage of water bottles are recycled which leaves the rest of them landing in landfills and let us remember that just about everyone of those bottles are not biodegradable. I guess we live by plastic and in the end we just might die by plastic.

BRING IT IN TAKE IT OUT...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When it comes to our fragile National Parks that beauty includes garbage of every kind. It is not uncommon for me to bring out more than what I came in with. The biggest offense is that of plastic bottles which are obviously a source of fluids for those hiking the trails and they never seem to find their way out. Some plastic when buried can last 700 years. I don't personally know the 700 year-old plus guy who did that study but the point is plastic has a double edge sword aimed right at our throat. In many ways plastic is a useful product but when it is discarded into our environment it will be around long after we're gone. Recycle what you use or be creative enough to find a new use for something that will just never go away.

Have an idea how to create something out of used plastic? Then send Hiker Joe an e-mail with your great work of art, or incredible invention and it just might be featured on Green it up America.

Until then I'll see you on the trail and do me a favor and hike out with what you brought in.

Try composting with plastic. Learn how at composting with plastic.

They say it’s not easy being green but from where I’m standing if we don’t try to even turn a little shade of lime we might not like what our future holds.

Hiker Joe is on the trail searching for greener pastures in our nutty environmental world. I don’t believe man is 100% to blame per say but we sure are doing our part to destroy the only planet we call home. That is unless u-haul started renting intergalactic spacecraft and nobody filled me in. It wouldn’t be the first time I was left out in the cold.

I have added a new cause to my ever growing list of things to do while trekking across America. It’s time to green up and find those things and people that are making it happen. From alternative fuels, renewable sources of energy, to making simple household choices that won’t break the piggy bank. People do still have piggy banks right? Know of somebody or something that is making a difference in our environment? Contact Hiker Joe at takeahike@hikerjoe.com and I’ll hoist my sails and check it out.

Let us remember it will take people to solve the problems we’re now faced with and every creative idea could be the solution. Get active in your community and inspire our youth to be a part of their future. It is time for the dreamers to create that future. One void of such a fragile environment.
